Meet our experienced developer and Team & Tech Lead Alexander who gets things done
Knowing people like Alexander Dobrev brings enormous calm. He is one of the rare breed of people of today who commit all the way and get the job done. A man of deep understanding who knows how to guide anyone to a successful end of any mission – in life in general as much as in the professional field as an experienced developer and Team & Tech Lead in Devision.
Alexander fully epitomizes the essence of our company with his ever present willingness to put himself on the line for his team. He is the Herbert von Karajan type of conductor who makes sure everyone is always on the same page and playing the right notes. Read some more about him and you will be completely aware what Devision means, because we are actually Alexander – wisdom turned into success.
What are your primary responsibilities and what does your day-to-day look like?
The first of my primary responsibilities is to support the team, making sure that everyone is able to perform their tasks properly. Then I am quite often participating in product development discussions and ensuring that all of the applications and servers are running in a perfect condition. This doesn’t mean however that I have zero time to work on new implementations and features.
What have you gained from working at Devision?
Mostly, experience and good examples to follow. I have also managed to create a couple of great friends, though it turns out that maintaining software apps during COVID pandemic is way easier than maintaining friendships. Devision is also the ideal place to develop yourself and not the typical company where all you should do is keep going from one deadline to another and simply delivering a product for the sake of it.
What advice do you have for prospective Devision candidates?
First and foremost, be honest and open about what you can do and what you expect from the job. In my opinion, lacking some skills or having higher expectations become minor problems once you have put your cards on the table. You should also know that there is never a perfect candidate for any position, but everything can be solved with proper communication.
When are you the happiest?
If you are asking me about specific situations, I am the happiest when I have managed to solve a problem and overcome a difficulty, regardless of whether it is a minor or a major one. And if you are asking me about a specific time of the year, I would say that springtime is by far my most joyful period. One could say that I really have spring in my step.
What is the next life milestone you want to achieve?
Extending my family with a new member. This, of course, is way harder than releasing a software or a feature, but it’s a fundamental part of life without which I would not see myself as truly successful.
Do you have any hobbies, go-to weekend activities, or long-term passion projects you’re working on?
I have been into video games for probably something like 20 years and that hobby not only doesn’t seem to go away but is actually growing on me. Lately, I started to be interested in hardware and PC building and managed to make a couple of builds for me and my friends. Outside of the IT related stuff, my weekends are usually “booked” for some light mountain hiking, a lot of local tourism (I really like to explore our beautiful Bulgaria) and from time to time bike riding as an amateur, just for fun.
If you could witness any historical event, what would you want to see?
Without a shadow of a doubt that would be seeing firsthand the first flight of the Wright brothers. Being present there in this decisive moment for the history of mankind would be a really cool thing. I would love to see the expression on the brothers’ faces when they managed to lift the plane off the ground.
Are you an iPhone or Android type of person?
Definitely the Android type. I don’t see myself as that cool looking guy who is trying to get people impressed just by his appearance. I am more of the “providing the right tools for the right problem” and the “gets the job done” sort of person.
What is the best vacation you’ve been to?
I will answer “Egypt” with full certainty and conviction. I had the chance to explore around half of Europe and our continent is kind of cool but boring at the same time, while Egypt was a quite different experience for me. And I don’t mean just the pyramids because they are quite overrated in my opinion – the nicer things are all of the ancient god temples, the cruises through Nile and the bargaining with the locals at the markets.
What’s your favorite line from a movie?
“A Wizard is never late, nor is he early. He arrives precisely when he means to.” I really like this line because it eloquently expresses the truth that all things happen in a natural order, at just the right time.
Most good things arrive way easier if the person who wants them is not hasty. Someone may ask why am I not answering with “You shall not pass”, but that is copyrighted by the continuous integration process when you haven’t done your code properly.
